Senior Mover Services

A different kind of move

Moving later in life is rarely just about furniture. It often means leaving a home of 30 or 40 years, choosing what to keep from a lifetime of belongings, and settling into somewhere smaller and unfamiliar.

It can also be physically hard. Packing a house is tiring at any age. Lifting, bending and climbing ladders to empty cupboards isn’t something anyone should be doing alone.

That’s why we approach senior moves a little differently. We don’t rush. We explain each step before we start it. We check before we pack, move or put anything away. And we’re happy to work with family members, so nobody has to carry the whole job alone.

Where people move to

  • Retirement villages. Many of our senior moves are into villages around Christchurch. Villages usually have their own rules about move times, parking, lift use and how much furniture fits in a unit, so we plan with those in mind.
  • A smaller home or unit. Downsizing from a family house to a townhouse, unit or flat. The challenge here is fitting the furniture into less space.
  • Closer to family. Moving across town, to a nearby town such as Rolleston or Rangiora, or to another city to be near children and grandchildren.
  • Into a family member’s home. Moving in with a son or daughter, often with a smaller set of furniture for a granny flat or spare room.
  • Into care. Moving into a rest home or care facility, where usually only a few personal pieces come along. These moves are small in size but big in meaning, and we treat them that way.

How we help

  • Packing. We bring all the materials and pack the house room by room, wrapping china, glassware, photos and keepsakes one piece at a time. Every box is labelled with its contents and the room it’s going to. Our packing and unpacking services page explains what’s included.
  • Moving. Furniture is wrapped in padded blankets, large pieces like beds and tables are taken apart where needed, and everything is secured on the truck.
  • Setting up the new home. At the other end, we put furniture where it’s wanted, reassemble beds and tables, and unpack boxes if you’d like us to. The aim is for the new place to feel like home on the first night, with the bed made up and the kettle within reach.
  • Storage. If some furniture is staying in the family but has nowhere to go yet, or the new home isn’t ready, we offer temporary storage.
  • Pianos. A piano that’s been in the family for decades deserves care. Our piano removal Christchurch service handles all types, including grands.
  • The old home. Once the truck is loaded, we can do a move-out clean, which helps when the house is being sold or handed back.

Moving into a smaller space

The hardest part of downsizing is usually deciding what fits. Here’s what makes it easier.

  • Get a floor plan of the new home. Retirement villages and agents can usually provide one with measurements. Mark where the bed, couch, dining table and favourite chair will go before moving day.
  • Measure the big pieces. Measure the bed, couch, wardrobe and dining table and check them against the floor plan. It’s far easier to decide now than to find out on the day that something won’t fit.
  • Choose the favourites first. Pick the furniture that matters most, such as the comfortable chair, the good bed and the cabinet with the family photos, and plan the rest around it.
  • Decide early on the rest. Offer pieces to family members, sell them or donate them well before moving day. Furniture going to family can often be delivered on the same day as the main move.
  • Keep the familiar. Familiar furniture, photos, cushions and ornaments help a new place feel like home. Leave room for them.

For families organising a move

Very often, it’s a son or daughter who makes the first call, sometimes from another city. That’s fine. We’re happy to work with whoever is organising the move.

  • One point of contact. Let us know who we should talk to about dates, access and what’s going. We’ll keep that person in the loop.
  • Plan together. If your parent wants to be involved in every decision, we’ll take the time. If they’d rather leave the details to the family, we’ll work with you.
  • Be there on the day if you can. It helps to have a familiar face around while the house is being packed and the truck loaded. If you can’t be there, we’ll call you when we arrive and when the job is done.
  • Split deliveries. If some furniture is going to the new home and some to family members’ houses, tell us when you book and we’ll plan the route.

Why choose Mainmovers

We take the time. Senior moves aren’t jobs to rush. We plan the day around what suits your parent, explain each step, and check before we pack or move anything.

You’ll know where you stand on price. Every quote comes with a breakdown of charges, so families can see exactly what’s included. Once you accept, we confirm your booking within 24 hours.

We do the whole job. Packing, moving, setting up, storage and the move-out clean can all go on one quote, so there’s one company to deal with instead of several.

We provide WINZ quotes. If help with moving costs is needed, we write up quotes for Work and Income.

And we’re local. Mainmovers is based in Upper Riccarton, and we know Christchurch’s retirement villages, units and townhouses, with their tight driveways and narrow internal stairs.

Common concerns and how we handle them

“Mum is worried about her good china and photos.”

We wrap every fragile piece individually, label fragile boxes clearly, and pack photos and keepsakes with extra care. If there’s anything she’d rather carry herself, she’s welcome to.

“Dad can’t help with the lifting.”

He doesn’t need to. We do all the packing, carrying and setting up.

“We live in another city and can’t be there.”

That’s common. We’ll talk to you on the phone, agree the plan and keep you updated on the day.

“The new unit is much smaller.”

We’ll help you plan what fits using the floor plan and measurements, and only move what’s going.

“Not everything is going to the new home.”

Some pieces can go to family members’ homes on the same day, and anything else can go into storage.
