We move the contents, not the house
To be clear up front: Mainmovers is a moving company for furniture and household goods. We don’t lift, transport or relocate buildings. That’s specialist work done by house relocation companies with their own trucks, equipment and council consents.
What we do is the job that has to happen before they arrive: emptying the house. Furniture, whiteware, boxes, the garage, the shed and everything in between, packed and moved to your new home, into storage or to family.
When a house needs emptying first
Sold for removal. You’ve sold the house to be trucked off the section, often because you’re building new on the land. The buyer or relocation company needs it empty by a set date.
Making way for a new build. You’re keeping the land and building new, so the old house is being removed or demolished. You need somewhere for your things while you build.
Infill and subdivision. The section is being subdivided or redeveloped, and the old house has to go first.
Demolition. The house is being knocked down, and anything worth keeping needs to be out beforehand.
Deceased estates. A family home is being sold for removal, and the family needs the contents sorted, packed and shared out.
Why timing matters
House removals and demolitions run to fixed dates. The relocation crew, the council consent and sometimes road closures are all booked around a particular day. If the house isn’t empty, the whole job can be delayed, and that can cost money.
That’s why we plan the clear-out back from your deadline:
- Know your date. Find out exactly when the house needs to be empty, and build in a buffer of a few days.
- Book early. Once you’ve signed the removal contract, book your movers. Don’t leave it to the last week.
- Clear the outbuildings too. Garages, sheds, sleepouts and carports often get forgotten. Check whether they’re going with the house or staying, and empty them either way.

Storage while you build
If you’re building a new home on the same land, there’s usually a long gap between the old house going and the new one being finished. Your belongings need somewhere safe to wait.

We pack your belongings, move them into storage and keep them there until your new home is ready. When you get the keys, we deliver everything straight to the new address and put it in the rooms you choose. Your storage cost is shown clearly in your quote, based on how much you’re storing and for how long, so you can plan it into your build budget.
What we do
- Packing. We bring all the materials and pack the house room by room, including the kitchen, wardrobes, garage and shed. Every box is labelled with its contents and destination.
- Moving. Furniture is wrapped in padded blankets, large pieces are taken apart where needed, and everything is secured on the truck.
- Split deliveries. Some things to your temporary home, some to storage, some to family. We plan the stops and label every item by destination.
- Rubbish, recycling and donations. Not everything is worth keeping, especially after years in the same house. Anything you don’t want can go to one of Christchurch’s EcoDrop transfer stations for recycling and disposal, or to local charity shops if it’s in good condition. That way the house is completely empty on the day the relocation crew or demolition team arrives, with nothing left in the garage, the shed or under the house.
