Furniture moving Services

What we move

Most of our furniture jobs fall into a few groups.

  • Lounge and dining. Couches, corner suites, recliners, dining tables and chairs, TV units, bookshelves and display cabinets.
  • Bedroom. Beds and bases, mattresses, wardrobes, tallboys, dressers and bedside drawers.
  • Kitchen and laundry. Fridges, freezers, washing machines and dryers. Tell us about these up front, because they’re heavy and often need a clear path through a narrow doorway.
  • Outdoor and garage. Outdoor tables, BBQs, shelving units and workbenches.
  • Precious pieces. Antiques, glass-fronted cabinets, mirrors and artwork. These get extra wrapping and go on the truck in a spot where nothing heavy can lean on them.

Got a piano? That’s a job for our Piano Movers Christchurch crew, who bring the right gear for it. Moving a full house rather than a few pieces? Our house movers Christchurch page explains how a whole-home move works.

How we look after your furniture

Furniture gets damaged in the same few places: doorways, stairs, the back of the truck and the moment it’s put down. So that’s where we focus.

Before anything moves, we wrap it. Couches and mattresses get covered to keep them clean and dry. Tables and cabinets get padded on the corners and edges, which take most of the knocks. Glass and mirrors get extra layers. We use proper packing materials, including boxes, tape, bubble wrap and packing paper.

On the way out, we measure the tight spots and plan the route through the house before we lift. A couch that has to go out on its end gets turned in the room, not jammed in the hallway.

On the truck, heavy items go on the floor against the front wall and lighter pieces go on top or alongside. Everything is secured so it can’t slide when we brake or go round a corner.

At the other end, we carry each piece to the room you want it in and put it where you point. You don’t need to shift it again later.

Furniture moves we do

Not every furniture job is a house move. Here’s what people book us for most.

  • Moving flats or rooms. Flatmates moving out, students heading to a new place, or someone moving into a partner’s home. Often it’s just a bed, a set of drawers and a desk.
  • Renovations. If you’re getting carpet laid, walls painted or a kitchen redone, the furniture needs to go somewhere for a while. We can move it to another part of the house, to a family member’s place or into temporary storage.
  • Buying and selling. Picked up a dining set from a garage sale or sold a wardrobe online? We’ll do the collection and the delivery.
  • Between homes when dates don’t match. We store large furniture in the gap between moving out and moving in.
  • Business furniture. Desks, chairs and filing for shops and offices. For bigger jobs, see our commercial moving company page.

For full-load jobs across the city, our furniture removals Christchurch page has more detail.

Why choose Mainmovers

We take small jobs seriously. Plenty of movers only want full houses. We’re happy to come out for a couch and a fridge, and we quote those jobs on their own terms rather than charging you for a whole-house move.

You’ll know where you stand. Your quote comes with a breakdown of charges, so you can see what you’re paying for, and once you accept it we confirm your booking within 24 hours.

We’re local. Mainmovers is a Christchurch moving company based in Upper Riccarton. We know the city’s townhouse stairwells, Port Hills driveways and tight inner-city parking, and we plan for them.

And we can do more than carry. If the furniture needs packing, storing, or the old place needs a clean once it’s empty, we handle that too, so you’re dealing with one furniture moving company rather than three.

Common furniture moving problems and how we solve them

“It won’t fit through the door.”

Usually it will, with the right angle and enough hands. We measure doorways and stairwells before we lift and plan the route out. If a piece truly can’t go through in one piece, we’ll talk to you before doing anything.

“My stuff got scratched last time I moved.”

That’s normally because furniture was carried unwrapped or stacked badly on the truck. We wrap every piece and load heavy items at the bottom so nothing presses on anything fragile.

“I can’t lift it myself.”

You don’t need to. We do the lifting at both ends, including stairs.

“The new place isn’t ready yet.”

We offer temporary storage for large furniture, so it has somewhere safe to wait.

“I only have one or two pieces.”

That’s fine. For a single TradeMe purchase or a trampoline, our single item movers service is often the simplest option. Just ask when you call.

“I need help paying for it.”

We write up quotes for Work and Income. Ask for a WINZ quote when you get in touch.

How a furniture move works

  1. Ask for a free quote. Fill in the form with both addresses, your date and a list of the main items. Or call 0800 800 812.
  2. Get your quote. We send a price with a breakdown of charges. If you add or drop items later, let us know and we’ll update it.
  3. Confirm your booking. Once you accept, we confirm your booking within 24 hours.
  4. Moving day. We wrap, load, secure and drive your furniture, then carry each piece into the room you choose.
  5. Extras, if booked. Storage, unpacking or a move-out clean get done as part of the same job.
Residential Moving Company

Getting your furniture ready

  • A bit of prep makes moving day quicker, and a quicker move usually costs less.
  • Empty drawers of anything heavy, breakable or valuable. Clothes can often stay in, but jewellery, documents and glassware should come out.
  • Take loose parts off. Glass shelves, cushions, table leaves and removable legs travel better on their own.
  • Defrost the freezer and dry out the fridge a day before. Disconnect the washing machine and drain the hoses.
  • Clear a path. Move rugs, pot plants and shoes out of the hallway, and make sure there’s somewhere for the truck to park close to the door.
  • Measure the new place. If you’re not sure a couch or wardrobe will fit where you want it, check before moving day rather than finding out at the doorway.
