Freight Movers Service

Freight, not a house move

A house move is about getting a household from one address to another. Freight is about getting goods from one place to another, often for a business, often on a schedule, and sometimes on a regular basis.

Because we’re a moving company, we bring the same habits to freight that we use on house moves: goods are wrapped where needed, loaded so nothing shifts, strapped down for the road, and carried in rather than dropped at the kerb.

What we carry

  • Retail and stock. Moving stock between shops, from a storeroom to a store, or from a supplier to your premises.
  • Furniture deliveries. For furniture stores, second-hand dealers and online sellers who need large items delivered to customers’ homes.
  • Business equipment. Office furniture, shelving, display units and equipment going to a new site, an event or a job.
  • Trade and workshop goods. Workbenches, tool cabinets, materials and equipment.
  • Household goods without a move. Furniture going into storage, items going to family members, or goods bought from a business that doesn’t deliver.
  • Bulky one-offs. Anything too big or heavy for a car or trailer. For a single couch or fridge, our single item service is often a better fit.

Where we deliver

We carry freight across Christchurch from our base in Upper Riccarton, and to surrounding towns such as Rolleston, Lincoln, Rangiora and Kaiapoi. For goods going further, such as to Ashburton, Timaru or beyond, ask us when you get your quote.

One-off jobs and regular runs

  • One-off freight. A single delivery or pickup when you need it. Common for businesses moving equipment, buying stock from another city’s supplier, or delivering a large order.
  • Regular freight. If you move goods on a regular basis, such as weekly deliveries between stores or regular customer deliveries for a furniture shop, talk to us about a regular run.

How to get an accurate freight quote

Freight quotes depend on the details, so the more you tell us, the more accurate your price.

  • What it is. A short description, such as “six boxed office chairs” or “solid timber dining table and eight chairs”.
  • Size and weight. Rough dimensions and weight for each item, or the total. A photo helps.
  • How it’s packed. Boxed, crated, on a pallet, wrapped or loose.
  • Pickup and delivery addresses. Including any loading docks, stairs, lifts or tight access.
  • Timing. When it’s ready to collect and when it needs to arrive. Tell us if there’s a set delivery window.
  • Who will be there. Someone needs to be at both ends to hand over and receive the goods.

Preparing goods for freight

A bit of preparation keeps your goods safe and the job quick.

  • Pack in sturdy boxes. Use strong cartons, tape the seams properly and fill gaps so nothing rattles. Avoid overloading boxes.
  • Protect fragile items. Wrap glass, ceramics and electronics individually and mark boxes clearly as fragile.
  • Label everything. Mark each box or item with the delivery address, the recipient’s name and a phone number. For multiple items, number them, such as “1 of 6”.
  • Group items together. Have everything in one place, ready to load, before we arrive.
  • Keep paperwork handy. If you have invoices, delivery notes or a packing list, have a copy ready for the driver.
  • Tell us about anything unusual. Heavy items, odd shapes or anything that needs to stay upright.

Why choose Mainmovers

We handle goods like furniture, not like parcels. Items are wrapped where needed, loaded carefully and strapped down so they don’t shift.

We carry it in. On furniture deliveries and business drops, we can carry items into the building rather than leaving them at the kerb. Tell us what you need at the delivery end.

You’ll know where you stand on price. Every quote comes with a breakdown of charges, and once you accept it, we confirm your booking within 24 hours.

We’re local. Mainmovers is based in Upper Riccarton, and we know Christchurch’s industrial areas, business parks, CBD loading zones and suburban streets.

And we can do more than freight. If your business is relocating rather than just shifting goods, our commercial movers Christchurch team can move the whole operation.

Common freight problems and how we solve them

“The courier won’t take it because it’s too big.”

Couriers have size and weight limits. We carry bulky and heavy goods that don’t fit those limits.

“I need it delivered inside, not at the door.”

Tell us when you book, including any stairs or lifts, and we’ll plan the crew.

“It’s going to a business with set delivery hours.”

Give us the delivery window and we’ll book the job around it.

“I’ve got several pickups and drops in one job.”

We can plan a route with multiple stops. For bigger, multi-stage jobs, our move logistics Christchurch service can help.

“It needs to go out of town.”

We do intercity freight to nearby towns. For goods going further, see our long distance moving services page or ask us when you get your quote.
